About The Brothel
Premier Production April 23rd, 2016, 7:30pm - 10:30pm
EP Salon -180 Flynn Avenue, Burlington
The Poetry Brothel is an immersive poetry event that takes the arts of the oral traditions and places them in the lush interiors of a bordello. It is a Sapiosexual den of iniquity; bringing bibliophiles, lexivores, and etymologists together to sate our lust for language by reveling in the passion of poetry.
We will feature a rotating cast of "Talent"; each performing within carefully constructed characters, disclosing their work in the form of public reading and in private, one-on-one readings. For a nominal fee, all of the "talent" are available for these sequestered readings at any time during the event.
The Poetry Brothel is a cabaret style event, offering a bar, music, dancers, and other creative forms of expression. We plan to expand on the concept with integrated themes for each event, solo performances and large-scale art installations at each event.
The Poetry Brothel is always seeking submissions from new performers. Are you a practiced poet or proficient with prose? Have you ever put on a costume and changed your name? Would you welcome an opportunity to read your work to a captive audience? If your interests have been piqued, please send up to 5 pages of curated writing and a description of the character or persona you are interested in playing to: poetrybrothelvt@gmail.com Ongoing call for submissions, the inaugural production of The Poetry Brothel in Vermont will be taking place on April 23rd at Encounterworks Productions Salon.
From the NYC PB:
"The Poetry Brothel is a performance art event aimed at fostering intimacy, urgency and exaltation within the (New York) poetry community and at expanding that community to include a more diverse population of artists. A dreamlike twist on a poetry reading, The Poetry Brothel is foremost interested in showcasing a diverse roster of emerging and established, local and international, male and female, innovative poets. The events are also immersive environments based in concept on the fin-de-siecle brothels in New Orleans and Paris, many of which functioned as safe havens for fledgling, avant-garde artists." - more at Poetry Brothel website.
