"Texas Chris" (nobody knows where he’s really from) is a wandering cowboy who hangs around the brothel doing odd jobs and telling stories for drinks and tips. He’s tolerated by the madam and patrons though sometimes he annoys the girls. The madam constantly needs to keep an eye on him.

Tonight he’s in the brothel waiting out the death of his old pal Jim. He tells a story to the bartender of how he and Jim met up and were separated when Jim never returned from Mexico after a rendezvous with his sweetheart. Whether the story is true or not, it’s sure to earn “Texas Chris” a few free drinks.

(Chris Abair keeps an oral tradition alive through his dramatic performance of ballads written by his grandfather, Vermont poet George Albert Leddy (1883-1967).
